Jason Norris has made NSW Senior Open history. The Queenslander birdied the final hole at Thurgoona Country Club Resort on Sunday 1 November to win by one shot and become the first player to complete the NSW Open–NSW Senior Open double, Golf NSW reported.

A wobble, then a finish

Norris began the final day with a four-stroke lead and was still three ahead after a birdie on the seventh, but drove out of bounds on the ninth for a double-bogey and bogeyed the short 12th. That let 2024 champion David McKenzie draw level. Norris regained the lead with a tee shot inside a metre on the par-3 16th, McKenzie answered with a birdie on the 17th, and the pair went to the last tied.

It was the same position Norris had been in four years earlier, when a triple-bogey on the final hole handed the title to Richard Green. This time he hit his approach to about 20 feet and holed the putt for a closing two-under 70 and a 13-under total.

“That’s always in the memory, isn’t it? One thing my psychologist said is you’ve got to acknowledge the past to move past it,” Norris said. “So I did exactly that. I thought, ‘This is what I want to do,’ and then did it.”

The leaderboard

  • Jason Norris: −13 (final round 70).
  • David McKenzie: −12, after a second successive 67.
  • Matt Millar: −8, third, playing through a back injury.
  • Murray Lott: fourth, one behind Millar, with a share of the day’s best round.
  • Chris Campbell: −3, leading amateur.

“Yeah, I’m a bit of a Thurgoona specialist,” McKenzie said after a third top-four finish in three years. “But Jase was great – and what a way to finish!” It was the third year in a row the title was decided by a birdie on the final hole.

Next stop: The Lakes

Attention now turns to Sydney. The Joe Kirkwood Cup arrived at The Lakes Golf Club on Saturday after a 1,200-kilometre, six-day trip from Coolangatta, visiting 15 golf clubs along the way, Australian Golf Digest reported. The BMW Australian PGA Championship will be played at The Lakes from 26 to 29 November, with a 156-player field competing for a $2.5 million purse. Adam Scott, Cam Smith, Min Woo Lee, Lucas Herbert, Daniel Hillier and defending champion David Puig head the field.
