Passive index funds and ETFs have overtaken actively managed strategies in net new flows into Australian equities for the first time, according to industry data released this week.
The shift mirrors a longer-running trend in US markets and reflects growing investor sensitivity to fees amid a decade of mixed performance from many active managers relative to benchmarks.
“Active management isn't dead, but it has to justify its fee every single year now,” one fund researcher said.
