A new quantum computing research lab has opened in Melbourne, pairing university researchers with industry partners in an effort to bring early quantum applications closer to commercial use.
The facility will focus initially on optimisation problems relevant to logistics and financial services, areas researchers say are likely to see practical quantum advantage soonest.
“We're still years from broad quantum advantage, but the use-case-specific work starts now,” the lab's director said.
